Congo - An Introduction

The Republic of Congo also referred as Congo – Brazzaville is a country in western central Africa. The country is bordered by Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon and Gulf of Guinea. Congo was a colony of the French before gaining independence in 1960. After independence there was Marxist rule for nearly four decades.  The first democratically elected government came into power in Congo – Brazzaville in 1990. The Republic of Congo adopted its’ new constitution on January 20, 2002.

The population living in Congo – Brazzaville is mainly concentrated in southwestern part of the country. The northern part is mainly tropical forest. The Capital Brazzaville lies close to the Congo River. Nearly 85% population lives in urban areas like Brazzaville, Pointe-Noire, or one of the small cities or villages lining the 332-mile railway that connects the two cities. The civil war in 1997 replaced European and non-African people from Congo – Brazzaville. At present only few hundreds people from non-African nations lives here.

Congo – Brazzaville is located on the Equator. The average day temperature stays around 24 degree Celsius and night 21 degree Celsius. The best time to make trip to Congo Brazzaville is between June to September. 

The economy of the Republic of Congo depends on agriculture, handicrafts work and petroleum production. Petroleum Oil has supplanted forestry as the mainstay of the economy, providing a major share of government revenues and exports. The hike in petroleum prices in 1980 enabled the Congo – Brazzaville government to finance large-scale developmental projects in the country. The economy has taken a back turn in 1998 due to falling oil prices. The government in Congo Brazzaville is striving hard to reshape economy with the help of international organizations like International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
